Ways to Use Vinegar Around the House
Remove stickers and sticky residue. To get stickers off that have “decorated” furniture and other surfaces, moisten with vinegar. Let sit for at least ten minutes, then remove.
Remove candle wax. First soften the wax with a hot hair dryer and blot up as much of the wax as you can. Get rid of the rest by using a clean cloth dipped in a mixture of 1/2 water 1/2 vinegar.
Get rid of odors. Rinse jars with a half and half mixture of vinegar and water to remove garlic or other strong odors. Boil water with several spoons of vinegar to remove the smell of burnt food from your kitchen. For persistent room odors, leave out a bowl of vinegar in the room overnight. For bags or lunchboxes, soak a piece of bread in vinegar and leave it in the bag overnight.
Carpet spills and stains. For spills on carpet, use a sponge or cloth to soak up as much liquid as possible. Then spray with a mixture of half vinegar, half water. Let stand for about two minutes, then blot with towel or sponge. Repeat as needed. For more persistent stains, use a mixture of 1 teaspoon vinegar, 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap, and 1 cup warm water. You can dry it with a hairdryer set on low.
Vinegar for window cleaning. To clean windows, spray with half vinegar, half water. Wipe off with either newspapers or cloth.
Clean silver, pewter, copper, or brass. Dissolve 1 teaspoon salt in one cup vinegar. Add flour to create a paste (1/4 cup or more). Apply the paste to the metal item, and let stand for at least fifteen minutes. Rinse with warm water and polish with a soft cloth.
Clean no-wax floors. Use a solution of 1 cup vinegar per gallon of water for a shinier surface.
Clean wood paneling. Use a mixture of 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/2 cup vinegar, and 2 cups warm water. Apply to paneling with a soft cloth. Dry with a clean cloth.
Clean window blinds. Using cotton gloves, dip your hands in a mixture of half water and half vinegar. Rub your hands along both sides of the binds flaps. Continue dipping your hands back in the mixture and rinse off the gloves periodically.
Prepare for painting. Vinegar helps paint stick to surfaces. Before painting a surface, scrub with vinegar and let dry.
