How to make ice cream in a bag - Homemade ice cream recipe without an ice cream maker

Updated from a few years ago

Our son just asked us if we could make ice cream. Sure thing I said. I went to a recipe that we already had in our Dessert category.

It’s so easy we made it with our 4 year old and twin 2 year old toddlers. They had fun making the ice cream with ingredients we already had in the house. I didn’t even need to make a run to the grocery store.

Ingredients For Ice Cream In A Bag Without An Ice Cream Maker:

  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk, half & half, or heavy cream You can even get away with 2%. For a dairy free alternative use almond milk, oat milk, etc. But the less fatty the milk the more you will end up with an icy gelato like dessert
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 6 tablespoons rock salt. Course Kosher salt also works
  • 1 quart-size plastic food storage bag (e.g., Ziploc)
  • 1 gallon-size plastic food storage bag
  • Ice cubes

How To Make Homemade Ice Cream In A Bag:

  1. Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt (or kosher salt. Any salt will do but the courser the better).
  2. Put milk (or creamer), vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
  3. Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully.
  4. Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about 5 minutes.
  5. Wipe off the top of the small bag, then open it carefully.
  6. Dish out the ice cream into bowls.
  7. Add toppings if wanted.
  8. Enjoy
  9. Share a picture of your family enjoying it and tag @ChaChingQueen!
