This is a sponsored post on behalf of Mercury Insurance about safe driving. All opinions are my own.
I spend a lot of time in the car, as do most parents. Between driving to and from work, my kids’ activities, and running errands, I’m on the road several hours during the week.
One of the things that makes me nervous about all of this driving is the number of auto collisions that happen each day. However, most auto collisions are preventable if drivers focus on their main task of safely operating their vehicles.
In order to help reduce fatalities and serious injuries, Mercury Insurance offers an app, MercuryGo, which aims to keep drivers focused on the road. An added benefit is it can also save Mercury auto insurance customers money.
Mercury Insurance MercuryGO App for Texas Drivers
Driving safely is an important issue for Mercury Insurance. The company is always looking for ways to help people drive with more focus, as well as give them the skills needed to avoid dangerous driving behaviors, , so it now offers MercuryGO, a usage-based insurance app to help driving skills and traffic safety.
In 2018 alone, there were 3,619 motor vehicle traffic fatalities in Texas. In addition to this, we had 12,161 serious injury crashes, with 14,908 people sustaining serious injuries.
Some of the most common behaviors that increase one’s risk of getting into an accident are excessive speeding, hard braking, distracted driving, and road type.
How the MercuryGO App Helps Drivers in Texas
MercuryGO helps decrease the amount of the most common causes of collisions by using technology that research has shown has reduced distracted driving by 29%, speeding by 45%, and hard braking by 17%.
When you use the MercuryGO app, you get driving scores based on braking, accelerating, cornering, speeding, and phone use. It also calculates an overall score.
For each drive, within each of these categories, you can see exactly where points were deducted, so knowing your score can help you become a better driver.
There is also a sharing option for families, so parents can keep an eye on their teen drivers who are enrolled to use the app making sure they are being safe on the road. With real-time feedback, parents can see when, where, and how fast their kids are traveling.
My Experience Using the App
I’ve been using the app now for a month and my overall score is a 95. I’ve learned a lot about my driving and what I need to focus on.
For me, it is braking. I need to be more careful, especially in traffic, about braking earlier and applying less pressure to the pedal than I have been.
MercuryGO lets me see exactly where I brake too quickly or severely.
Here’s an example: On a recent drive, a man and his two dogs unexpectedly ran across a residential, somewhat busy street, not at a stop sign or crosswalk. I instantly applied my brakes which, thankfully, I was able to do in time without coming close to hitting them because my eyes were on the road. However, the app allowed me to see exactly where and at what time this event occurred, and reminded me that I should always be alert while I’m driving.
I am really enjoying using this app and will continue to use it to improve my driving. I highly recommend getting the app to help yourself and your family become better drivers.
