Turn an Old Toothbrush Into a DIY Bottle Cleaner

Your old toothbrush does not have to go straight into the trash. If you have one sitting near the sink, or if your family replaces toothbrushes often, this is an easy way to give one of them a second use.

Cleaning inside narrow bottles, travel mugs, jars, and small glasses can be frustrating. A sponge does not always fit, and even when it does, it can miss the bottom edges where grime likes to sit.

A person uses a toothbrush to clean the inside rim of a metal tumbler over a kitchen sink.

Instead of buying a special bottle brush, you can make a simple cleaning tool with something you already have at home. An old toothbrush can be bent into the right shape so it reaches inside tighter spaces much easier.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to turn an old toothbrush into a simple DIY bottle cleaner using only a lighter, so you can scrub inside bottles, glasses, jars, and travel mugs more easily.

Why an Old Toothbrush Works for Cleaning Bottles

A white and blue toothbrush with yellow and blue bristles lies on a wood-patterned surface.

An old toothbrush might not look like much, but it can be surprisingly useful for cleaning bottles. The small brush head, sturdy bristles, and easy grip make it great for scrubbing spots that are hard to reach with a sponge.

Reaches Tight Spots

Bottles often have narrow openings, curved sides, and little corners where residue can build up. An old toothbrush is small enough to reach into those areas and scrub more precisely than a regular dish sponge.

Bristles Help Loosen Buildup

The bristles on a toothbrush are firm enough to help loosen stuck-on grime, dried drink residue, or buildup around the bottom and edges of a bottle.

This makes it especially helpful for bottles that need more than a quick rinse.

Gives You Better Control

A toothbrush is easy to hold and move around, which makes cleaning feel less awkward. You can angle it where you need it and focus on the spots that actually need scrubbing.

Saves Money and Reduces Waste

Instead of buying another specialty cleaning brush, you can reuse something you already have at home. It is a simple way to get one more use out of an old toothbrush before throwing it away.

Materials Needed for This DIY Bottle Cleaner

You only need two things for this simple DIY cleaning tool:

Old toothbrush
Lighter

A black utility lighter and a blue-and-white toothbrush placed parallel on a light wood surface.

Use a toothbrush you were already planning to throw away. The bristles should still be firm enough to scrub, but it does not need to look new.

The lighter is used to gently warm the plastic handle so it can bend. You do not need to melt the whole toothbrush, and you should not heat the bristles. A little warmth on the handle is enough to help shape it.

How to Bend an Old Toothbrush Safely

Before using the toothbrush as a bottle cleaner, you need to change the angle of the handle. This only takes a minute, but it is important to heat the plastic carefully and bend it slowly.

Warm the Toothbrush Handle

A hand holds a toothbrush over a lighter, with the toothbrush head being exposed to an open flame above a wood-patterned surface.

Start by holding the toothbrush near the middle of the handle. Keep the bristles away from the flame so they do not melt or burn.

Use the lighter to carefully warm one spot on the plastic handle for a few seconds. Move the flame around slightly instead of holding it in one place too long.

You only want to soften the plastic enough to bend it. Do not let it burn, bubble, or drip.

Bend the Toothbrush Into Shape

A person bends the neck of a blue and white toothbrush with both hands over a wooden surface.

Once the plastic starts to soften, gently bend the toothbrush into a curved shape. The goal is to angle the brush head so it can reach inside bottles, glasses, and jars more easily.

Bend it slowly instead of forcing it. If the plastic still feels too stiff, warm it for a few more seconds and try again.

Let the Toothbrush Cool

A person holds a bent cleaning brush with blue, yellow, and white bristles on a light wood-grain surface.

Hold the toothbrush in the bent position for a few seconds while the plastic cools. Once it hardens again, it should keep the new shape.

Make sure the handle feels sturdy before using it. If it feels weak or cracked, it is better to use another old toothbrush.

Use Simple Fire Safety

Be careful when using a lighter for this hack. Work in a well-ventilated area, keep the flame away from anything flammable, and do not touch the heated plastic until it has cooled.

Seriously, be safe here. The plastic fumes are toxic and you don’t want to burn yourself touching plastic.

Keep the flame away from the bristles and only heat the handle. This makes the toothbrush easier to bend without ruining the cleaning end.

How to Use the Bent Toothbrush to Clean Inside Glasses and Bottles

A person uses a brush to clean the inside of a metal bottle over a sink.

Add warm water and a little dish soap to the bottle, glass, or jar you want to clean. Then slide the bent toothbrush inside and use the angled brush head to scrub the bottom and sides.

The curved handle helps the bristles press against spots that are usually hard to reach. This is helpful near the bottom edges, around corners, and inside narrow containers where a sponge does not fit well.

You can also use it for travel mugs, reusable water bottles, small vases, baby food jars, and other containers with tight openings. After scrubbing, rinse everything well with clean water.

When you are done, rinse the toothbrush too and let it dry before storing it with your other cleaning tools. Since it is no longer for teeth, it helps to keep it separate from regular toothbrushes.

Why This Simple Toothbrush Cleaning Hack Is Worth Trying

This is one of those easy home hacks that costs almost nothing. You are reusing something you already have, and you do not need to buy a special bottle brush for every small cleaning job.

It is also a good way to get one more use out of an old toothbrush before tossing it. Instead of throwing it away right away, you can turn it into a handy little scrub brush for awkward spaces.

The best part is how simple it is. A small bend in the handle makes the toothbrush much more useful for cleaning bottles, glasses, jars, and other narrow containers.
