As summer is fast approaching, I can feel the excitement building for those long, lazy days spent lounging by the pool or splashing at the waterpark.Â
It’s no wonder these aquatic wonderlands are so popular, attracting millions of visitors every year. According to recent data, the total more than 17 million people visited water parks in the United States.
This shows how beloved waterparks are, and how important it is to be prepared for a fun-filled day.
As parents to three little kids, it’s hard to get out the door and not forget something. It’s especially true when the kids are excited for the fun day ahead. That’s why I created this checklist of everything you need to take to the waterpark.
From swimwear to snacks, I’ve got you covered with all the essentials to ensure your day goes off without a hitch.
I’ll also share insider tips for families with little ones, seniors and those with mobility challenges, and even large groups looking to make a splash together. So grab your sunscreen and let’s get started!
Table of Contents
Clothing and Accessories Essentials
First things first, you’ll need the proper attire for a day of water-fueled fun. Start with your favorite swimsuits.
For women, a one-piece or tankini style provides more coverage and support for all the running, jumping, and sliding you’ll be doing. Avoid any complicated string bikinis that could come undone.
For men, board shorts or swim trunks with a mesh lining are perfect for waterpark adventures.
Rash guards are also a smart choice, especially for kids and those with sensitive skin. These snug-fitting shirts protect against rashes, chafing, and sunburn while allowing full mobility. They’re ideal for wearing under life jackets too.
As parents of 3 little kids, Force of Nature is our go-to all purpose cleaner. It's nontoxic but is EPA approved for use against Covid-19.
We love vinegar, but we use Force of Nature every day.
And don’t forget a couple of towels, one for drying off after taking the plunge, and another for lounging and soaking up some rays.
Aqua shoes with good grip are an absolute must for navigating the slippery surfaces around the pools and splash pads. Trust me, you don’t want to be that person who unintentionally splits on the wet concrete!Â
A hat and sunglasses will keep you looking stylish and protect you from the sun’s intense rays.
The right attire serves both fashion and function at the waterpark. With swimsuits that stay put, rash guards for sun protection, and non-slip footwear, you can focus on having fun rather than dealing with wardrobe malfunctions.
Insider Tip: Opt for a wide-brimmed hat or a baseball cap with a strap to keep it secure during those high-speed waterslide adventures.
Flotation Devices For Waterparks
Since we have young kids, we can’t forget to bring flotation devices to the waterpark! While many waterparks offer flotation devices, their availability and quality can vary significantly.
Infants (Under 2 Years)
For the youngest visitors, safety is paramount. Parents should look for U.S. Coast Guard-approved infant life jackets that fit snugly and often include features like a strap between the legs and a padded headrest to keep the baby’s face up.
Baby floats with built-in seats are also ideal for infants who can’t yet swim, designed to provide stability and comfort in the water.
Typically, waterparks do not provide these infant-specific flotation devices due to sizing and safety concerns, so bringing your own is essential to ensure it fits properly and meets all safety standards.
Toddlers (2-4 Years)
As toddlers begin to explore more actively, flotation devices like puddle jumpers and floaties are a great choice.
These combine a life vest with arm floaties, offering more freedom while ensuring the child stays buoyant. Type III life jackets provide substantial support for those a bit more comfortable in the water.
While some waterparks might offer puddle jumpers, availability can vary, and having your own guarantees that it fits well and comforts your toddler.
Children (5-12 Years)
For children, swim vests and flotation suits are suitable options. Swim vests provide good buoyancy and allow greater freedom of movement for swimming, making them less restrictive than traditional life jackets.
Flotation suits, which offer both sun protection and buoyancy, are perfect for younger children within this group who aren’t strong swimmers.
Though larger waterparks typically have a range of flotation devices for children, these may be available on a first-come, first-served basis. To avoid any issues, check the waterpark’s policy ahead of time or bring personal devices.
Teens and Adults
Teens and adults who are not strong swimmers or those less confident in the water should consider using standard life jackets.
For those who can swim but might want some extra support during more strenuous activities or in wave pools, swimming aids like noodles or kickboards can be helpful.
Most waterparks provide basic flotation aids such as noodles or life jackets for older guests.
Personal Care Must-Haves
Sunscreen, my friends, is a non-negotiable item for any waterpark day. In fact, The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
You’ll want to opt for a water-resistant formula that can withstand your aquatic antics and don’t be stingy with the application – lather up generously and reapply frequently, especially after taking a dip or sweating profusely.
Lip balm with SPF protection is another essential item, preventing those dreaded dry, chapped lips that can damage your day.
And speaking of dryness, be sure to pack aloe vera gel or after-sun lotion to soothe any accidental burns or sunburns. Insect repellent is also a wise addition, especially if the waterpark has lush landscaping or is more tropical.
Remember to pack a small first-aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers in case any minor mishaps occur during your aquatic escapades.
Fuel Up with Food and Drinks
Staying hydrated and energized is key to maximizing your waterpark adventure. Pack refillable water bottles and plenty of snacks like energy bars, nuts, or dried fruits to keep your energy levels up as you conquer those towering waterslides and navigate the lazy river.
For more substantial sustenance, sandwiches or fresh fruits make for easy-to-eat meals that won’t weigh you down.
And let’s be real, who can resist indulging in a delicious waterpark treat like a funnel cake or ice cream cone? It’s all part of the experience! Just be sure to bring cash or credit cards for any food and drink purchases at the park.
Insider Tip: Freeze a few water bottles the night before your waterpark visit. They will keep your drinks icy cold and serve as makeshift ice packs if needed!
Other Handy Items
In this day and age, it’s almost impossible to go anywhere without our trusty smartphones. But you’ll want to keep your device safe and dry at the waterpark with a waterproof phone case or pouch.Â
This way, you can capture all those memorable moments with your camera or GoPro without worrying about water damage.
A beach bag or backpack is a must for carrying all your essentials and keeping everything organized and within reach. And don’t forget to bring cash or cards for parking, lockers, or any other services offered at the waterpark.
Insider Tip: Invest in a waterproof pouch or dry bag to keep your valuables safe and dry while splashing around.
Safety First
While waterparks are designed for fun, safety should always be a top priority. One of the most important rules is to always swim with a buddy and stay within designated swimming areas.
It’s easy to get carried away (literally and figuratively) in the excitement. Still, it’s crucial to be aware of your surroundings and watch for hazards like slippery surfaces or strong currents.
Take regular breaks to rest, rehydrate, and follow all posted rules and regulations. After all, the waterpark staff knows the lay of the land (or should I say, the lay of the water?) better than anyone.
Insider Tip: Designate a meeting spot for your group if anyone gets separated. This will save you from frantic searching and allow you to focus on the fun.
Tips for Families
Bringing little ones to the waterpark? As a parent of three energetic kids, believe me when I say you’re in for a whole new level of excitement.
Pack a stroller or carrier for easy transport, as those little legs can get tired quickly. And don’t forget extra clothes and diapers, you never know when an “accident” might occur.
It’s also a good idea to bring a small entertainment kit with toys, books, or games for those inevitable downtimes when the kids need a break from the water. Trust me, a bored child at a waterpark is a recipe for disaster (or at least a major meltdown).
Insider Tip: Invest in a waterproof phone case or pouch and load it up with your kids’ favorite shows or movies. It can be a lifesaver during those moments when they need a little entertainment break.
Tips for Seniors and Those with Disabilities
Waterparks aren’t just for the young and sprightly, they can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. If you or a loved one has mobility challenges, bring a walking stick or cane for support, as well as a portable chair or beach blanket for resting.
Consider bringing a personal care assistant or companion for additional support, especially if you’ll need help navigating certain areas or rides. And don’t hesitate to ask waterpark staff about any accommodations or accessibility options they offer.
Insider Tip: Many waterparks have designated “quiet areas” or cabanas that can provide a respite from the hustle and bustle for those who need it.
Tips for Large Groups
Waterparks provide an ideal setting for group gatherings and celebrations, from family reunions and birthday parties to simply getting together with friends. But with large groups comes the need for coordination and planning.
Make sure to coordinate with your group to ensure everyone has the necessary items, and consider renting a cabana or private area for gathering. This will give you a designated “home base” where you can store belongings, take breaks, and enjoy some shade and privacy.
Bringing a cooler with snacks and drinks for the group is also a wise idea, as it can save you money and ensure everyone stays fueled and hydrated throughout the day.
Insider Tip: Assign a “group leader” or designated meeting spot to help keep everyone together and accounted for, especially if you plan on splitting up at different times.
Bonus Tips
Arrive early to beat the crowds and secure prime seating or a shaded spot for your group.
Take advantage of waterpark amenities like lockers and showers to keep your belongings safe and freshen up before and after your aquatic adventures.
Consider purchasing a waterpark membership or season pass if you plan to visit frequently. It can save you money in the long run and often comes with perks like discounts on food and merchandise.
