Poop is gross. Your baby is going to poop. These are facts. Your baby will poop and it will be gross.
If the thought of scraping, shaking, or spraying poop into the toilet or trash grosses you out, the best thing you can buy after you’ve invested in cloth diapers (also called Nappy’s), is cloth diaper liners.
These liners will solve your poop problem. If you use liners, your life will be less gross, when it comes to dealing with your babies poop.

Disposable liners
A disposable nappy liner looks similar to fabric softener sheets. You lay it in the diaper as you’re prepping. The baby poops on it.
Then you throw the pooped filled liner away (if it’s disposable.) Many of the liners are marketed as flushable. You will have to decide if you’re comfortable with that.
Disposable cloth diaper liners will decrease how much you will clean your diapers before your regular wash routine. This is because the poop is mostly in the trash can, or down the toilet.
Both disposable and reusable cloth diapers liners will decrease the stains you will deal with. The liner is absorbing the pee and poop. So there is less need to add extra cycle washes, and there is less need to sun the stains out.
ChaChingQueen recommends disposable diaper liners over reusable. That’s because you need to clean the reusable ones.

Are disposable nappy liners flushable?
This is an area for debate, and will depend on the type of plumbing you have. While many of the liners on the market are advertised as being flushable, there isn’t any mention if they’re safe for septic systems or traditional sewer systems.
Your house will have to decide if you’re comfortable with the risks that could be associated with flushing the disposable liners. It is just as simple to drop the dirty liner into the trash. You’ll want to avoid just tossing poo in the trash, otherwise your house will be very stinky.
You’ve eaten dehydrated fruit, and it’s still real fruit. Earth Breeze Laundry Sheets are along the same lines. They’re actual laundry detergent but made in eco-friendly sheets. They’re just dehydrated laundry sheets that come in cardboard envelopes.
Depending on where you live, if your grocery stores offer plastic grocery bags, they’re perfect to toss the dirty liners into, tie up and drop into the trash. If you’re in an area that doesn’t offer plastic grocery bags, you can also re-use the little plastic bags that you have brought your produce home in.
Unless you have a pail to store dirty diapers (in this case dirty disposable liners), like the diaper genie you will want to place the liner in something to avoid a stinky house.
Reusable liners
Many cloth diaper users are environmentally conscious, and want to avoid filling the landfill with dirty diapers. If you’re adamant about doing your part to reduce what goes into the landfill, then reusable cloth diaper liners are what you will want to invest in. Re-usable liners will need to be rinsed off.
So while they may save you money and create less trash, you’ll need to deal with poop more than you would if you went with disposable liners. Like disposable liners these reusable liners will also wick moisture away from your littles bottom.

Fleece Liners
Some cloth diaper parents prefer fleece liners. You can make your own cloth nappy liners by cutting a piece of fleece into the right size.
Poop doesn’t stick to the fleece so you can slide the waste into the toilet. Then you can throw away the fleece when you are finished.
A bad Idea for a DIY Liner
As with anything else, there are DIY options for liners. One we’ve heard about is using paper towels. This sounds like a horrible idea. Why use something that abrasive on your baby’s bum?
Cloth diaper liners are better for your babies butt
You will not always be able to change your baby’s diaper immediately after they poop or pee. That means poop and pee is up against their butt until you are able to change their diapers.
The liners wick moisture from your baby’s butt. The diaper absorbs the moisture, but the liner helps wick it away.
When to start using Cloth Diaper Liners
There’s much debate in todays society about the best way to feed your baby. This isn’t a blog on whether breastfeeding is best, or formula is better. Fed is best, you know what is right for you, and your baby.
You also won’t find a debate on when or how to introduce table food. Again, you know what’s best for you and your baby.
What you will find on our blog is a lot of talk about poop. So, when is the best time to start using cloth diaper liners? This will depend on how you have decided to feed your little one.
If your little is exclusively breastfed, you won’t need liners until you introduce solids. Breast milk poop is water soluble, and can go directly into the washer without the need for liners or rinsing.
The consistency of the poop will change once you introduce any type of solid- rice cereal, fruits, veggies- that’s when shit is going to get real.
If your baby is formula fed, or a mix of breast milk and formula fed you will want to use liners as soon as your liners arrive on your door stop. If you’re using reusable liners, you will want to wash them first.
You will want to continue using liners for the duration of you little one being in diapers. You won’t regret it.
Bottomline: Cloth Diaper Liners are great
If there is one thing you buy along with your cloth diapers it should be liners. They are good for your baby’s bum, good for the diapers, and make it easier to deal with the poop.
They reduce the urgency which you’ll to do laundry. There is no shortage of accessories with cloth diapers (or anything), but liners are a must have.
