Dollywood Park History and Transformation

Dollywood has captivated guests since its humble beginnings as Rebel Railroad in 1961.

Rebel Railroad was renamed Goldrush Junction in 1970. It became Silver Dollar City, Tennessee in 1977 when the Herschend family took over. Dolly Parton joined the ownership in 1986, leading to the final name change to Dollywood​.

Over the decades, it transformed into the world-class destination owned by country legend Dolly Parton. 

Today, this 165-acre family playground features over 50 awesome rides, museums, theaters, and a glimpse into Appalachian crafts.

Wait? Dollywood Used To Be Called Silver Dollar City?

We love Silver Dollar City outside of Branson, MO. That’s why we were surprised to learn that Dollywood used to be called Silver Dollar City. But yes, it’s true.

It is not a coincidence that these parks were both called Silver Dollar City.

the same company, Herschend Family Entertainment, owns both Dollywood and Silver Dollar City.

Herschend Family Entertainment, originally founded by Hugo and Mary Herschend, owns and operates several theme parks and attractions across the United States.

They purchased the property in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in 1977 and rebranded it as Silver Dollar City, Tennessee. In 1986, they partnered with Dolly Parton, leading to the renaming of the park to Dollywood.

Herschend Family Entertainment also owns and operates the original Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri, which opened in 1960. The company’s portfolio includes various other attractions such as White Water Branson, Adventure Aquarium, and several dinner theater shows​

Dollywood Regular Ticket Prices

If your visit is just for a short stint, Dollywood offers several options for regular single-day and multi-day tickets. 

The 1-Day Pass clocks in at $92 for adults, with discounted pricing of $82 for children aged 4-9 and seniors.

For a bit more time to explore, the 2-Day Pass is $119 for adults, $109 for kids/seniors and the 3-Day Pass for $129 for adults, $119 for kids/seniors.

You can save a bundle by opting for the multi-day passes instead of single day tickets.

Dollywood Season Pass Options

An adult Silver pass is $169 and $159 for kids/seniors. The premium Gold pass runs $244 adult/$234 kid/senior and includes free parking, food/merchandise discounts, and free friend tickets.

Upgrading to a 2-park Silver pass is $224 adult/$214 kid/senior to access Dollywood’s waterpark too. The top 2-Park Gold pass costs $289 adult/$299 kid/senior with all the Gold pass perks. 

Season passes quickly pay off with free parking alone after just 2-3 visits. You’ll skip ticket lines and qualify for exclusive hotel discounts. For locals and frequent visitors, a season pass is the way to go!

Dollywood offers an incredible deal for families with young children through their Pre-K Imagination Pass.

This pass provides free admission for the entire 2024 season to children born in 2019 or 2020, making it an amazing value for families with preschool-aged kids.

We have twin pre-schoolers. We just signed them up for Dollywood’s Imagination Pass. We can plan to head to Pigeon Forge again this summer.

Can You Bring Food Into Dollywood?

One of our favorite ways to save at amusement parks is to bring our own food. Dollywood has specific policies regarding outside food and drinks. Generally, you are not allowed to bring coolers, full meals, or outside beverages into the park.

But you are allowed to bring in one unopened bottle of water per person. Baby food and formula are also allowed.

They also provide complimentary cups of water at all food outlets with fountain drink capabilities.

You are also allowed to bring in small snacks. While full meals are not allowed, small, individually packed snacks are permitted. This includes items like granola bars, trail mix, and chips. Bringing your own snacks to Dollywood is a great way to save.

If you need to take a break and eat food you’ve brought with you, there are picnic areas outside the park where you can enjoy your meal before re-entering.

You and your kids will be much hungrier than you expect, since you are walking around all day. Bring snacks.

By the way, there is a work around. You can bring your own food into Dollywood if you have dietary needs. Guests with food allergies or other dietary needs can bring in their own food and drinks.

Dollywood Military Discounts

Active and retired military personnel, disabled veterans, reservists, and their families get a sweet 30% discount on Dollywood tickets, honoring their service. 

Group Discounts At Dollywood

For groups of 15 or more people, Dollywood offers discounted admission. If you’re planning a trip with an organized group, such as a school field trip, company outing, or tour group, be sure to take advantage of their group discount pricing.
