As a landlord with over 20 years of experience, I’ve seen my fair share of flooring materials come and go.

Luxury plank flooring (LPF) is a popular choice due to its durability, aesthetic appeal, and ease of installation. However, gaps can sometimes form between the planks, detracting from the floor’s appearance and potentially causing further issues if not addressed.

Unfortunately, I’ve had the installation botched more times than I care to remember, leaving unsightly gaps between the planks that mar the otherwise perfect finish. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t worry.

I’m here to share my tried-and-true method for fixing those pesky gaps and keeping your floors looking flawless.

This guide will explain what causes these gaps, how to fix them, and how to prevent them in the future.

Causes of Gaps in Luxury Plank Flooring

Gaps in luxury plank flooring can occur for several reasons:

  1. Temperature and Humidity Fluctuations: Changes in temperature and humidity can cause the planks to expand and contract, leading to gaps.
  2. Improper Installation: If the planks are not installed correctly, gaps can form over time. This might happen if the planks are not tightly connected or if the subfloor is uneven.
  3. Wear and Tear: Regular use and foot traffic can cause the planks to shift, especially in high-traffic areas.

Step-by-Step Guide to Fixing Gaps

Step 1: Identify the Problem Areas

Begin by walking around your floor and identifying all the gaps. Make a mental note or mark them with a piece of painter’s tape. Ensure the floor is clean and free of debris, which can obstruct the process.

Step 2: Gather Your Tools

You’ll need a few tools for this job:

Step 3: Clean the Gaps

Use a vacuum or broom to remove any dust, dirt, or debris from the gaps. This step is crucial as any particles can prevent the planks from fitting snugly together.

Step 4: Stand and Kick Method

The way I find works best involves a simple but effective method. Start by standing on one plank to hold it in place. Ensure you’re applying firm pressure but not too much to damage the plank.

While standing on the first plank, use your foot to kick the adjacent plank towards the gap. Aim to deliver a controlled, firm kick. This action should push the planks back together.

Step 5: Repeat as Necessary

Repeat the standing and kicking process for each gap.

Step 6: Inspect and Adjust

Once you’ve addressed all the gaps, walk around the floor again to ensure all the planks are tightly joined. Make any additional adjustments as needed.

Preventing Future Gaps

To prevent gaps from forming in the future, follow these tips:

  1. Maintain Consistent Temperature and Humidity: Use a humidifier or dehumidifier to maintain a consistent indoor environment. Aim for a humidity level between 30% and 50%.
  2. Proper Installation: Ensure your luxury plank flooring is installed correctly. This includes preparing the subfloor adequately, using the right tools, and following the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  3. Regular Maintenance: Keep your floors clean and inspect them regularly for any signs of shifting or gaps. Address any minor issues before they become significant problems.
  4. Use Area Rugs and Furniture Pads: Place area rugs in high-traffic areas and use furniture pads to minimize wear and tear on the flooring.

By following these steps and preventative measures, you can ensure your luxury plank flooring remains beautiful and gap-free. If gaps persist or you encounter significant issues, it may be best to consult a professional flooring installer for advice and assistance.
