Style Tips For Big and Tall Men; Plus Size Man In Suit

This is a contributed post from Michelle.

Men, are you struggling to pick the best dressing styles that flatter your large body type? Fashion talk usually eludes big and tall men, so don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Here are eight fantastic tips to help you dress sharp and carry yourself with confidence.

Table of Contents

  • Don’t Be Scared of Fitted Clothes
  • Pay Attention to Colors and Patterns
  • Choose the Right Suits
  • Don’t Forget Your Footwear
  • Make Use of Coats and Jackets
  • Wear Your Shirts Right
  • Accessorize Properly
  • Choose Your Pants Wisely
  • Final Word

Don’t Be Scared of Fitted Clothes

You might have gotten used to wearing baggy clothes so you can hide your beer belly. But, the truth is that excess room in your clothes makes you look sloppy and bigger than you might be. Next time you go shopping, don’t go for a size larger; buy your exact size.

Pay Attention to Colors and Patterns

Don’t use busy patterns and graphics in hopes of looking smaller. Instead medium-sized and solid patterns will compliment you much better. Keep it simple and go for lightly striped shirts or repeated crests.

As far as colors go, embrace dark colors like brown, navy, black, and wine red. If you want to wear other colors, try to pick their darker shades.

Choose the Right Suits

If you are a big man, it’s a good idea to go for three-buttoned suits and blazers. This design of suits helps lengthen your torso and improves your overall look. Make sure you always button up in the middle and have thicker lapels to match your size. Also, stay away from those thick shoulder pads when shopping for a suit.

Don’t Forget Your Footwear

Here’s a style tip that can change your entire look – say no to wearing running sneakers with dress clothes or work clothes. Avoid large and bulky shoes and go for sleek and monochromatic ones when you want to look more put together.

Make Use of Coats and Jackets

Swapping your short jacket with an oversized leather jacket for men can prove to be an excellent style upgrade for you. Shorter coats and jackets tend to draw attention to the midsection.

Longer coats make your body appear long and lean by eliminating the halving effect that most outfits create. So, avoid wearing a trenchcoat and instead go for a duffel or toggle coat to create that illusion.

Wear Your Shirts Right

Have you been wearing all your shirts and t-shirts untucked? It’s true that having a single plane of fabric over your belly draws less attention to your midsection and makes you look less chubby. But it only works if done right.

Button-fronted summer shirts or shirts that have even hems look good untucked. If you have a large midsection, be careful with untucking ducktail-type shirts that are longer in the front and back.

Accessorize Properly

If you are a large man, you might as well go with larger accessories. Avoid wearing thin belts and tightening your pants too much. Wearing your belt below your stomach is a big no-no because it looks bumpy and unflattering. Go for a no-buckle belt or suspenders to look stylish.

Do you like to wear a watch? Then go for one that is large enough for your wrist. The same goes with ties. Avoid skinny ties. Go for ties that are moderately sized and have a wider bottom.

Choose Your Pants Wisely

If you have a bigger bottom, a good styling hack would be to wear straight-legged pants. These kinds of pants allow you to look thin by balancing the proportions of your lower body. If you want to wear medium-rise pants, go for the ones that don’t have seams to avoid looking bulky at the bottom.

Final Word

Dressing well should be an enjoyable process, whatever your body type. All you need is more awareness about your preferences and the patience to find the clothes that fit you right. Follow our little style guide, and you’re sure to look stylish no matter what you weigh.
