Homemade Decorated Flower Pots for Father’s Day or Mother’s Day DIY Gift
My dad loves to spend time in the yard enjoying the sunshine, gardening, and taking care of his lawn. I was trying to think of a good Father’s Day gift idea for him.
I brainstormed ideas related to the backyard and came up with the idea to decorate and fill a flower pot him.
Here are some ideas for decorating the flower pot. This would be a fun DIY Mother’s Day gift idea too.
If Dad has a favorite sports team, use paints with colors from that team, mementos, baseball cards and more with the method I used for decorating gift boxes. Add the kid’s handprints.
All you need is a clay pot (got mine from Home Depot), paints (I used acrylic), and some kind of finishing spray or mod podge. I actually used Mod Podge and a finishing spray.

- Versatile usage in drinks and meals.
- Natural, non-overpowering flavor.
- Potential weight gain if consumed outside of workout routines.
- Packaging might give the illusion of less product due to powder settling.
- Limited flavor variety may require mixing with other flavors to avoid monotony.

I like to use big brushes for the majority of the project and small ones for touch-ups.
With the kids, I painted a plain terra cotta flower pot with acrylic paints and then had them add their handprints.
Since then, I have made other decorated flower pots. These make great gifts for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays, and more.

You could even plant some fruit or vegetables in a decorated pot, if you use a big enough pot.
Here in Texas, spring is strawberry season. As a fun Mother’s Day gift, you could decorate a flower pot for Mom and then plant some strawberry seeds or plants.
You can also decoupage pictures, mementos, baseball cards and more, similar to the method I use to decorate gift boxes.
