If you’re a parent, you know that kids and messes go hand in hand. But when you’re the parent of four-year-old twins who love to paint, those messes can quickly escalate into full-on disasters.
Take our experience, for example. We recently discovered several mounds of paint on the carpet in our “play room”.
It was just a big mess of orange! After panicking, we just cleaned it up, and taught them, yet again, only to paint at the table.
So, if you’ve found yourself in a similar predicament, don’t worry. Here’s a simple tutorial on how to remove that stubborn paint from your carpet.

Step-by-Step Guide to Removing Paint from Carpet
Step 1: Scoop Up the Excess Paint
First things first, you’ll want to scoop up any excess paint with paper towels. Be gentle and try to lift the paint rather than scrubbing it into the carpet fibers. This will help prevent the stain from setting in further.

Step 2: Spray with a Cleaning Solution
Next, you’ll want to treat the area with a cleaning solution.
You can use a mixture of dish soap and water, but we found that our go-to household cleaner, Force of Nature, works even better. Generously spray the stained area with Force of Nature.
As parents of 3 little kids, Force of Nature is our go-to all purpose cleaner. It's nontoxic but is EPA approved for use against Covid-19.
We love vinegar, but we use Force of Nature every day.
Step 3: Rub to Remove the Paint
Now comes the manual labor. Using a clean cloth or sponge, gently rub the area to lift the paint. Be patient, as this may take some time depending on the size and severity of the stain.

Step 4: Repeat As Needed
If the stain persists, repeat steps 2 and 3 until it is completely gone. Remember, patience is key here. It might take a few rounds of treatment, but with persistence, your carpet can look as good as new!

Understanding Different Types of Paint
This tutorial is effective for most water-based paints – commonly used in household and children’s art projects.
These paints are generally easier to clean while they’re still wet, but our method can also tackle dried stains with a bit more effort.
Water-based paints include:
- Acrylic Paints: These are fast-drying paints that become water-resistant when dry. However, if tackled quickly, our method can effectively remove acrylic paint stains from carpet.
- Tempera Paints: Often used in schools, these are non-toxic, and the stains can be cleaned easily.
- Poster Paints: These are usually used for arts and crafts. They are water-soluble and can be easily cleaned up.
This method might not work as effectively on oil-based paints.
Cleaning oil-based paint from a carpet can be a bit more challenging due to its water-resistant properties, but it’s not impossible.
If you’re dealing with an oil-based paint stain, it’s recommended to seek professional cleaning advice to avoid damaging your carpet further.
But if you want to try to clean up oil based paint yourself, here is how:
The first step is to blot the stain with a clean, dry cloth to absorb as much paint as possible, but remember not to rub, as this can push the paint further into the carpet fibers.
Once you’ve blotted up as much paint as you can, apply a small amount of turpentine to a clean cloth and gently dab it onto the stain.
The turpentine should help to break down the oil in the paint, making it easier to remove. After applying the turpentine, use a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap to clean the area, blotting with a clean cloth until the stain is gone.
It’s important to test the turpentine on an inconspicuous area of your carpet first to ensure it won’t cause discoloration. Once the stain is removed, rinse the area with cold water and blot dry.
Always remember to wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated area when using turpentine due to its strong fumes.
Remember, the sooner you can tackle the paint stain, the better. The longer any type of paint sits on the carpet, the harder it will be to remove.
